Twenty-five years ago, when we first uttered the words “genre-neutral,” the music industry looked at us like we were speaking a foreign language. Back then, everything had to fit into neat little boxes – electronic, ambient, downtempo, experimental. But we saw something different. We saw sound as a fluid, breathing entity that couldn’t be contained by arbitrary labels.
The term “genre-neutral” wasn’t born from a marketing meeting or a brainstorming session. It emerged organically from our frustration with the limitations imposed by traditional genre classifications. We were discovering artists whose work transcended these boundaries, creating sonic experiences that borrowed from ambient textures, downtempo rhythms, and experimental electronics all within a single piece.
This year, as we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we’re proud to see how this philosophy has influenced not just our catalog but the broader conversation around music categorization. Genre-neutral isn’t just what we do – it’s who we are. It’s the lens through which we view every piece of sound that crosses our path, asking not “what genre is this?” but “what does this make you feel?”
Our journey began with a simple belief: that sound itself is music, and music shouldn’t be confined by the expectations of genre. This foundational principle has guided every release, every collaboration, and every artistic decision we’ve made since day one.
